Welcome to Week 5.
The term is certainly moving along at a rapid rate. Have you heard the new radio advertisement promoting our school? Our Captains, Poppy and Max did an amazing job highlighting our school, especially the new sport competition, the Charism Cup. You can hear the ad on MMM Dubbo. During this current enrollment period, we encourage all parents to engage actively in conversations with friends, family, and colleagues about the positive message of SJP. By sharing our experiences and highlighting the unique opportunities our school offers, we can inspire others to consider joining our community.
This Wednesday, over 100 students from Years 4 - 6 will be participating in the NSW Netball gala day. The students have been training very hard with Mrs Lees and Mrs Kenny. I am sure they will have a fun day. Good Luck!
At SJP we are continually teaching our students about digital and online safety to help them become knowledgeable digital citizens.
Online spaces should be safe for everyone, but you may sometimes come across content that is distressing – especially if it shows extreme violence or acts of terrorism.
Inappropriate content may be an image, video or written words that can be upsetting, disturbing or offensive. Young people may encounter inappropriate content accidentally or deliberately. It is normal to be curious, but young people may be faced with concepts they are not ready for developmentally.
Inappropriate content may include:
- sexually explicit material
- false or misleading information
- violence
- extremism or terrorism
- hateful or offensive material.
The exposure of young people to inappropriate content is difficult to measure because many instances go unreported. A child may come across inappropriate content and not tell anyone due to embarrassment, confusion or fear. Given this, the percentage of young people encountering inappropriate or hateful content online could be higher than stated.
Prevent and manage exposure to inappropriate content From Early Years to Year 2 students should build skills in:
- identifying online behaviours that make them feel safe and unsafe
- identifying and describing emotional responses people may experience in different online situations
- removing themselves from unsafe online situations if they come across inappropriate content
- describing strategies to help them search for safe, reliable information on safe search engines and websites. Between Years 3 to 6, students should:
- develop an awareness of situations that might increase their exposure to inappropriate content online
- examine primary and secondary online sources to determine origin, purpose and reliability, and describe and apply strategies that can be used to reduce and manage exposure to harmful content
- question what they encounter online and begin to think critically about issues including body image, gender identity, racism, fake news and democracy
- investigate support services such as eSafety and Kids Helpline
- consider ways to set up their devices and apps to minimise accidental exposure to inappropriate content, for example, using screen time tools Reporting to eSafety
Australian residents can make a complaint to eSafety about illegal and restricted online content. This includes child sexual abuse material and abhorrent violent material showing terrorist acts, murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping or torture.
Gospel Reading
Matthew 28:16-20
Jesus sends his disciples to make disciples of all nations.
Family Connection
The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity invites us to remember that God has revealed himself to us as one God in three Persons. As Jesus departed from his disciples, he shared with them the power to make disciples of all nations. He taught his disciples to invite others to share in the life of the blessed Trinity by sharing with others the gift of Baptism. This continues to be the mission of the Church. Each of us who has been baptized shares in the life of the blessed Trinity and also shares in the Church’s mission of inviting others to share in God’s love.
As you gather as a family, bring out pictures and other mementos of family celebrations of the Sacrament of Baptism. Talk about the significance of Baptism with your family. Read together today’s Gospel, Matthew 28:16-20. Notice that Jesus taught his disciples to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. What else does this remind you of? (the Sign of the Cross) Recall that whenever we pray the Sign of the Cross, we are reminding ourselves that we are united with God through our Baptism and share in the life of the blessed Trinity. Conclude by thanking God for sharing his life with us.
God Bless and have a wonderful week
